Chapter Four
We hurried across the large expanse of yard separating my lawn from Luciâs. Technically, it was all mine. I owned the land under Luciâs house. Maybe Iâd charge him rent. Yep, I was totally going to tell him the next time I saw him that he owed me rent.
When we reached my house, I spotted Snoozer in the front yard, circling the rest of the people and creatures that belonged with us. As soon as he realized I was heading toward them, he took off running in my direction, followed by Owen, who had been working a shift at the bookstore all day, then Zoey and Wallie, with Zoey constantly flitting little glances Wallieâs way. I wasnât sure what that was all about. Then again, Zoey hadnât been around others her age. Alfred and Larry came next, both well within the boundaries of the ward weâd put up. Sammie and Sam brought up the rear.
âWhatâs going on?â I asked. âWhy is everyone out here if you found him?â
Snoozer yowled loudly and turned in a circle. What was wrong with him?
Wallie pointed to the crazy cat. âBecause heâs acting like that.â
The big feline walked a few feet away, toward the big forest where I liked to practice my magic behind Luciâs house. He yowled again as if he wanted us to follow.
As a group, we did just that. What an entourage. It was becoming ridiculous, yet I loved every moment of having my family around me. Even Larry had grown on me, becoming a part of my family, loose skull and all.
âDo you want us to follow you?â I asked.
Snoozer cried out again and went forward another few feet.
âI guess so,â I muttered.
Sam moved around the crowd to walk beside me. âDrew had to go help with a call,â he said. âHe asked me to tell you goodbye.â
âThanks,â I muttered as we followed my nutty cat.
âI told him I wouldnât kiss you for him, though, but Larry said heâd be happy to.â Sam wiggled his eyebrows at me.
âHey,â Larry said. âI did not.â
We all laughed until Snoozer stopped and turned to glare at us. âWhoa,â Sam whispered. âHe means business. Iâve never seen him so pissy.â
âI have,â I muttered. âHeâs a cranky ass.â
Snooze growled low in his throat before turning and hurrying into the trees. He was in an extra cranky mood today. He really did mean business.
âNow, that Iâve never heard him do.â Heâd never growled at me a day in his long life.
Snooze stopped one more time and made a sound that I wouldâve sworn was, âHelp!â
We quieted down and followed him through the trees until we came to the clearing where I liked to go to draw dead things to me and practice my powers. In the middle of the clearing a small, white animal laid motionless. Snooze sprinted toward it, and we all hurried forward.
It was a cat, and from the looks of her, sheâd been hit by a car or something equally traumatic. âOh, no,â I whispered.
