Chapter Four

We hurried across the large expanse of yard separating my lawn from Luci’s. Technically, it was all mine. I owned the land under Luci’s house. Maybe I’d charge him rent. Yep, I was totally going to tell him the next time I saw him that he owed me rent.

When we reached my house, I spotted Snoozer in the front yard, circling the rest of the people and creatures that belonged with us. As soon as he realized I was heading toward them, he took off running in my direction, followed by Owen, who had been working a shift at the bookstore all day, then Zoey and Wallie, with Zoey constantly flitting little glances Wallie’s way. I wasn’t sure what that was all about. Then again, Zoey hadn’t been around others her age. Alfred and Larry came next, both well within the boundaries of the ward we’d put up. Sammie and Sam brought up the rear.

“What’s going on?” I asked. “Why is everyone out here if you found him?”

Snoozer yowled loudly and turned in a circle. What was wrong with him?

Wallie pointed to the crazy cat. “Because he’s acting like that.”

The big feline walked a few feet away, toward the big forest where I liked to practice my magic behind Luci’s house. He yowled again as if he wanted us to follow.

As a group, we did just that. What an entourage. It was becoming ridiculous, yet I loved every moment of having my family around me. Even Larry had grown on me, becoming a part of my family, loose skull and all.

“Do you want us to follow you?” I asked.

Snoozer cried out again and went forward another few feet.

“I guess so,” I muttered.

Sam moved around the crowd to walk beside me. “Drew had to go help with a call,” he said. “He asked me to tell you goodbye.”

“Thanks,” I muttered as we followed my nutty cat.

“I told him I wouldn’t kiss you for him, though, but Larry said he’d be happy to.” Sam wiggled his eyebrows at me.

“Hey,” Larry said. “I did not.”

We all laughed until Snoozer stopped and turned to glare at us. “Whoa,” Sam whispered. “He means business. I’ve never seen him so pissy.”

“I have,” I muttered. “He’s a cranky ass.”

Snooze growled low in his throat before turning and hurrying into the trees. He was in an extra cranky mood today. He really did mean business.

“Now, that I’ve never heard him do.” He’d never growled at me a day in his long life.

Snooze stopped one more time and made a sound that I would’ve sworn was, “Help!”

We quieted down and followed him through the trees until we came to the clearing where I liked to go to draw dead things to me and practice my powers. In the middle of the clearing a small, white animal laid motionless. Snooze sprinted toward it, and we all hurried forward.

It was a cat, and from the looks of her, she’d been hit by a car or something equally traumatic. “Oh, no,” I whispered.
